“Our bond has always been special.” Suryakumar Yadav Opens Up About His Strong Bond with Coach Gautam Gambhir

A new era has begun in the Indian cricket. After the T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid passed the baton to Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach position. With that, another new chapter was added. After Rohit Sharma retired from the T20 format, Suryakumar Yadav will captain the Indian side in the T20 series against India. The coach-captain duo will start their first assignment with this tour. Before that, Suryakumar Yadav shared insights into his relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir, highlighting their strong bond and the positive impact it has had on his game.

Suryakumar Yadav on His Bond With Gautam Gambhir:

Before stepping into the T20 series, Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir played together in IPL. As the first T20I against Sri Lanka approaches, India’s new T20I captain, Yadav, discussed his strong bond with Gambhir, who supported him early in his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders.

From 2014 to 2017, Suryakumar Yadav played 54 matches for KKR under Gambhir’s captaincy. Gautam Gambhir, a key supporter, even made Yadav vice-captain. Now, Gambhir will coach, and Yadav will captain the T20 series against Sri Lanka. While talking about the strong bond, “Our bond (him and Gambhir) has always been special.”

After that, he added, “From 2014 till now, it has been exactly 10 years. In 2018, I joined another [IPL] franchise and he (Gambhir) joined another franchise. But we used to talk regularly about the game. When he used to play with another team, I used to play with him. We used to discuss the game to see if we could do better in that match.”

Lastly, he said, “The learning has been going on since six years when I was not with him. This bond is always special. We have talked a lot, but not so much. But he knows my body language. When I see his body language, I know what he wants to say to me. And what I want to say to him. When I say no, he understands what he wants and what I want. So this bond is very special between coach and captain. I am very excited for this journey ahead of me.”

Backing the Other Player:

After lifting the T20 World Cup trophy, Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20 cricket. Apart from them, almost all the T20 World Cup players will play in this series. In the absence of those big names, some promising youngsters have been named in the squad. Captain Suryakumar Yadav have got their back.

He has a positive mindset about all those youngster’s abilities. While talking about this, he said, “It will be difficult to fill the shoes, but obviously people have practiced so much, new players have come, they are already doing well when they play franchise cricket.”

Lastly, he added, “And the matches they played for India, they have done very well in that too. So I have a lot of trust in those three, who have just come in their place, that they will do well.”

The T20 series is all set to be kicked off on July 27. In 2021, India traveled to Sri Lanka for the limited over series. But the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian side lost the T20 game against them. This time, both teams have their new setup with new captains and coaches. The encounter is set to be intense. Fans are waiting to see the high-voltage clash.
