The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has secured a significant agreement, selling the naming rights of Gaddafi Stadium to a private bank for PKR 1 billion over the next five years. This landmark deal marks a new chapter for the iconic venue, though the PCB has yet to make an official announcement regarding the agreement. This move not only underscores the stadium’s prominence but also reflects the growing commercial interest in Pakistani cricket infrastructure.
Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium Secures New Name:
The Pakistan Cricket Board has finalized a PKR 1 billion agreement with a private bank to rename Gaddafi Stadium for the next five years. Although the official announcement is pending, sources confirm the deal is done. Following the precedent set by Karachi’s National Stadium, Gaddafi Stadium will also adopt the bank’s name, marking a significant shift in its identity. This development highlights the growing trend of stadiums being named after corporate sponsors.
A close source of PCB stated, “ The deal is for one billion rupees while the board had sold naming rights for the Karachi stadium for 450 million dollars.”
Under the leadership of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB aims to offset renovation expenses for three major stadiums ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 through strategic partnerships. By securing naming rights and similar agreements, the PCB seeks to alleviate financial pressures and enhance the venues’ readiness for the prestigious tournament. This approach reflects a proactive strategy to manage costs while ensuring the stadiums meet the high standards required for international cricket events.
The source further stated, “ Naqvi also wants to increase revenue streams to support domestic cricket which will benefit Pakistan cricket.”
In 1974, the Lahore stadium was named in honor of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, reflecting a historical connection. This iconic venue has since been known as Gaddafi Stadium, symbolizing the era in which the naming took place and its significance in the realm of international cricket.
Ramiz Raja’s Stadium Naming Initiative Previously:
In 2021, PCB’s former chairman and ex-captain Ramiz Raja initiated the sale of naming rights for cricket stadiums across Pakistan. During his tenure, a notable agreement was finalized for Karachi’s National Stadium, which is now officially called the National Bank Cricket Arena. This strategic move marked a significant shift in how the PCB approached stadium branding and commercial partnerships, aiming to generate revenue and enhance the visibility of Pakistan’s cricket infrastructure.
