Pakistan may lose Asia Cup 2023 hosting rights

The Asia Cup 2023 was set to happen in Pakistan in September this year. However, as per the latest reports, there’s a chance that Pakistan may no longer host the Asia Cup and the tournament could be moved to a new destination entirely. The entire reason for doing so is that India have refused to travel to Pakistan for their games, and the Asian Cricket Council wants to conduct the entire tournament in just one country.

Where could the tournament be shifted to?

A source close to The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the Asia Cup 2023 tournament will be played in either Qatar or the United Arab Emirates (UAE). One of the key aspects of this decision is that Pakistan will also have to play their matches in either Qatar or the UAE, as BCCI and the Government of India have made it clear that they will not allow the Indian team to play in Pakistan due to ongoing political tensions between the two countries. This has led to some uncertainty and speculation around the tournament, but the BCCI remains committed to hosting a successful and competitive event.

The Asia Cup 2023 tournament has been mired in controversy in recent months, following comments by BCCI secretary Jay Shah that India will not travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), stated that the competition would be shifted to a neutral venue due to concerns over security and other issues.

How have Pakistan reacted to it?

This decision has been met with resistance from Pakistan, which had been awarded the hosting rights for the Asia Cup 2023. However, India has insisted on playing their matches at a neutral venue, citing concerns over the political tensions between the two countries.

If India were to reach the final of the tournament, the summit clash would also be held outside of Pakistan, adding to the logistical challenges facing the organizers of the event. On that note, Pakistan had earlier threatened to not travel to India for the ODI World Cup, and get their games conducted in a neutral venue.

However, the BCCI source that revealed the story has also stated that BCCI is not scared of PCB’s vague threats. “We understand the pressure tactic applied by PCB because of Asia Cup but let me tell you, Asia Cup will be played in Qatar or UAE, probably Pakistan has to play in any of the countries.”, the source told PTI.
