Paul Collingwood Surprised By Spectator’s One Handed Catch

Those who have participated in red ball cricket understand how challenging it may be to make a catch. On Day 3 of the first Test match between England and Sri Lanka at Manchester’s Old Trafford Cricket Ground, however, one fan made it appear simple.

In the 83rd over, Asitha Fernando, a bowler from Sri Lanka, bowled one short to Mark Wood. In an attempt to chase it, the Englishman dragged it as far away as possible, near the mid-wicket stands. To say that Mark Wood, a fast-bowling specialist, scored six runs would have seemed unexpected would be an understatement. However, the focus was drawn to what the onlooker did. 

The spectator astonished the commentators and onlookers by making the catch with just one hand while maintaining a solid grasp on his drink at the same time. The audience burst into applause for the spectator’s brilliant play. But before the conclusion of the 85th over, England were all out, and it did not take long for Mark Wood to give up his wicket.

Thanks to a fantastic maiden century by wicketkeeper-battler Jamie Smith and a half-century by supporting man Harry Brook, the home team amassed a score of 358. Taking command in the first Test, England amassed a lead of 122 runs. Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis’ early wickets strengthened England’s hold on the match. In their opening two overs, Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson struck to put England in a commanding position.

If Sri Lanka hopes to return to the winning side, they will need to perform well. In order to maintain their chances of winning the first Test, the middle-order batting unit would need to figure out how to form a strong partnership in order to guarantee that they can score a sizable total.
