“Phil Simmons Has Been Helpful With The Wickets” Says PNG Captain Assad Vala After Losing T20 World Cup 2024 Match

Papua New Guinea and West Indies were embroiled in an entertaining face off in the second match for the ICC T20 World Cup today at the Providence Stadium, Guyana.

West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl first. This led to an impressive first innings with PNG scoring 136/8 against their much more mature opponents.

West Indies won today’s match, scoring 137/5 in 19 overs, hence winning the match by 5 wickets. The PNG bowlers and Fielders worked their best to take wickets of the West Indies side.

“Another 15-20 runs would’ve been nice” says PNG Captain 

After losing today’s match, the PNG’s Assad Vala seemed disappointed. However, the captain also appreciated the team’s efforts and accepted that scoring 15-20 runs more could’ve been better.

“We knew we missed a trick towards the end. Another 15-20 runs would’ve been nice. But from the wickets we lost early, to post 136 was a good effort. Yeah, really happy with the way we fought.” Assad said.

Vala also commented on Phil Simmons and how he has been an integral part of the team as he has helped a lot with the wickets.

“Got wickets in key moments. It’s an opportunity and challenge we look forward to. Want to play our best cricket against the best players. He’s been helpful with the wickets and conditions (talking about Phil Simmons).” He added.

Sese Bau scores fifty, makes history

Following his captains’ steps, PNG batter Sese Bau scored a fifty in today’s match. Bau became the second player ever to score a half-century in the T20 World Cup for PNG.

Previously, PNG Captain Assad Vala had scored 56 runs back in 2021 in a match against Oman. 

Sese’s score helped the team reach a high score, especially after losing 2 wickets after only scoring 7 runs for the team.

PNG’s next match is scheduled for June 6 against Uganda at the Providence Stadium.
