Phoebe Litchfield, at just 21, has been named captain of Sydney Thunder for the upcoming WBBL season, becoming the league’s youngest full-time captain. Her leadership reflects maturity and game experience.
The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) will see a new, youthful leader for Sydney Thunder
21-year-old Phoebe Litchfield has been appointed captain for the upcoming season.
This decision marks her as the youngest full-time captain in WBBL history, succeeding England‘s Heather Knight, who previously held the role.
“Phoebe becoming captain of Thunder just feels right,” Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said. “She’s young, but her experience in the game makes this a natural progression. Phoebe has always been mature beyond her years, and her leadership qualities have been evident from the moment she joined Thunder.
“We’ve seen Phoebe thrive under pressure, whether it’s for Australia in the World Cup or in key moments for Thunder. She’s a great leader, both by character and by example, and we are excited to see her step into this role.”
Litchfield, a homegrown talent, has progressed rapidly in her career since debuting for Sydney Thunder at 16. In her 67 matches, she has amassed 1212 runs at an average of 24.24, with a notable rise in her strike rate last season.
As captain, she’ll be leading a balanced mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, such as England’s Knight and international talents like Chamari Athapaththu and Shabnim Ismail, under the guidance of head coach Lisa Keightley.
A Homegrown Talent with an Impressive Record
Litchfield, who debuted for Sydney Thunder at 16, has grown into one of the WBBL’s exciting young talents.
She’s recorded 1212 runs over 67 matches and consistently raised her performance.
Last season, her strike rate saw an impressive boost, scoring 309 runs at 130.37, signalling her readiness for leadership.
“It’s a huge honour to be named captain of Sydney Thunder,” Litchfield said. “I’ve grown up playing for this club and learning from some incredible leaders, so to now have the opportunity to lead such a talented group of players is really exciting.
“We’ve got a great mix of experience and young raw talent, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge of captaining the side this season.”
This progression aligns well with her new captaincy role, as she now leads a squad rich in both experience and youthful talent.
Leadership and Support from Seasoned Players
Alongside seasoned players like Heather Knight and Shabnim Ismail, Litchfield can count on experienced guidance as she steps into her new role.
Former captain Knight will be absent in the latter half due to international commitments, which will shift even greater responsibility to Litchfield.
Trent Copeland praised her maturity, emphasising that Litchfield’s leadership is already visible in high-stakes games, making her an ideal fit for the captaincy.
Sydney Thunder is set to kick off its WBBL season on October 28 against Hobart Hurricanes. All eyes will be on Litchfield as she embarks on this new chapter in her career, bringing a fresh approach to the team’s leadership.
