PlayVS and Nintendo Expand Esports to Middle Schools
North American scholastic esports platform PlayVS has renewed its partnership with Nintendo of America, marking an exciting expansion in their collaboration.
Effective from Fall 2024, this renewed partnership will extend esports opportunities to middle school students across the United States and Canada.
Previously focused on high school competitions, the partnership now includes students from grades six to twelve, featuring popular Nintendo Switch games such as Splatoon 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Nintendo of America will continue to support the initiative by providing its games and hardware to schools free of charge.
This expansion builds on a successful partnership that began in May 2021, during which PlayVS has facilitated over 73,000 matches involving 10,500 teams from all 50 states.
The move to include middle schools aims to increase accessibility and engagement in competitive gaming from an earlier age.

The inclusion of middle schools in the PlayVS and Nintendo partnership represents a significant shift in scholastic esports.
Starting this Fall, students in grades six through twelve will have the opportunity to compete in esports tournaments featuring Nintendo’s popular games.

Nintendo of America’s ongoing support includes providing schools with free access to Nintendo Switch games and hardware.

Nintendo’s support also underscores its broader commitment to grassroots esports initiatives, similar to its recent collaboration with National Student Esports in the UK.
