Prohibitory Orders Imposed in Gwalior Ahead of India-Bangladesh T20 Match

As Gwalior gears up to host its first international cricket match in 14 years, the district magistrate has imposed prohibitory orders to ensure a peaceful environment for the upcoming T20I clash between India and Bangladesh on October 6. The orders, effective until October 7, aim to prevent protests and the circulation of inflammatory material, particularly on social media, following rising tensions related to the match.

Background of Prohibitory Orders

The decision to clamp down on protests comes after the Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing organization, called for a “Gwalior bandh” on match day. The group is protesting against what they describe as “atrocities” committed against Hindus in Bangladesh. This unrest follows violent demonstrations and significant political upheaval in Bangladesh earlier this year, which saw a change in government amid reports of targeted violence against minority communities.

District magistrate Ruchika Chauhan issued the prohibitory orders based on recommendations from local law enforcement. The Superintendent of Police (SP) noted that various organizations were planning processions and demonstrations that could incite communal tensions. The SP highlighted that inflammatory messages circulating on social media could further exacerbate the situation, prompting the need for strict measures.

Key Restrictions Enforced

Under the prohibitory orders, any person found inciting religious sentiments or disrupting the match via social media will face legal action. Additionally, all forms of demonstrations—including effigy burning—are banned during this period. The administration has also prohibited gatherings of five or more people and restricted the carrying of weapons, including sharp objects like swords and spears.

Furthermore, the use of flammable substances such as kerosene and petrol is banned within a 200-meter radius of all buildings in Gwalior. These measures are aimed at maintaining law and order, as approximately 1,600 police personnel will be deployed for security and traffic management during the event.

Reactions from Local Organizations

Jaiveer Bharadwaj, national vice president of the Hindu Mahasabha, has been vocal about his organization’s stance. He condemned the hosting of the Bangladesh cricket team in light of ongoing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. “The Hindu community is under attack; it’s not right to play cricket with a nation where our people are being targeted,” he stated during a recent protest.

The Hindu Mahasabha has also called upon local traders to support their bandh initiative, emphasizing that they will mobilize efforts over the next few days to ensure participation from Gwalior residents.
