Purple Cap Holder of IPL 2023: Updated After RR vs LSG Match 26

In a thrilling encounter at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, the Lucknow Super Giants managed to defend a total of 154 against the Rajasthan Royals, spoiling their homecoming after almost four years. On the bright side, the Orange Cap list has seen two significant changes after tonight’s encounter.

Wood returns at the top

In a rather surprising turn of events, Mark Wood has returned as the Purple Cap holder despite not playing tonight’s game. Before the game started, Yuzvendra Chahal held the Purple Cap. However, he ended the game wicketless and also went for 41 runs in his 4 overs. Thus, his economy has now worsened. Chahal’s economy is 8.25 while Wood’s economy is 8.12. Furthermore, Wood has played lesser games than Chahal.

So, technically, the Purple Cap has gone back to Mark Wood. That’s something really surprising and has not been seen much in the history of the game. Wood and Chahal both have 11 wickets, but Wood won because of a better economy. He is now the number 1 bowler on the Purple Cap list.

Ashwin breaks into the top 10

Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the best in business and it was only a matter of time before we saw him in the top 10 names for the Purple Cap. He has been like that slow and steady turtle that beat the rabbit in the race, picking 1 or 2 wickets every game for Rajasthan Royals. Not only was Ashwin economical in tonight’s encounter, but he also scalped two important wickets of in-form Kyle Mayers and Deepak Hooda.

Ashwin was eventually the ‘Bowler of the Day’ with his figures of 2 for 23 in 4 overs. Ashwin has now climbed up to the 6th spot with 8 wickets in 6 games for Rajasthan Royals. His entry has meant that Varun Chakravarthy has been shown out of the top 10.
