In a recent interview, Ravichandran Ashwin offered insightful observations on the leadership philosophies of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. He also noted that while Rohit and current coach Gautam Gambhir have similar styles, there is one significant distinction: Gambhir has an intense personality, whereas Rohit strives to maintain a light-hearted team environment.

MS Dhoni was commended by Ashwin for his consistency and his caring demeanor toward the players. “One thing I liked about Dhoni as a player was his consistency. He gives players a lengthy run and opportunity,” Ashwin said. “Jadeja was groomed as a finisher under Dhoni and has become an excellent all-rounder,” he said, highlighting Dhoni’s contribution to the growth of players like Jadeja.

Ashwin called Virat Kohli’s management approach incredibly motivating. Kohli is the one in the lead. He fulfills his own obligations before expecting the team to do anything. “His leadership inspires me greatly,” Ashwin said.

Ashwin highlighted Rohit Sharma’s tactical prowess and capacity to uphold a supportive team atmosphere. “Rohit is a tactically adept player who works hard to prepare for series or important games by analyzing with the coaches and analytics teams.” He supports his players well and maintains a pleasant atmosphere,” Ashwin clarified.

Ashwin also mentioned the fierce leadership style of Gautam Gambhir. As Ashwin put it, “Gambhir has a similar level of intensity to Rohit when it comes to his captaincy.” With warmth, Ashwin discussed his friendship with Rahul Dravid, characterizing it as both intense and playful. Rahul and I have a special relationship. Together, we participated in the Duleep Trophy and club cricket. Our relationship changed after he was appointed head coach, and these days I make the most jokes about him,” Ashwin said.

“Rahul bhai has a great sense of humor and can take a joke about himself,” he said, praising Dravid for his humor and perceptive approach to cricket. He frequently asserts that winning a series is more important in international cricket than individual runs or wickets.

Ashwin provided a practical perspective on the subject of perception and criticism. Some people will deliberately distort your reality and draw attention to your shortcomings. He counseled, “Don’t waste time trying to change people’s beliefs; not everyone will congratulate you.”
