Former Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid recently emphasised the remarkable evolution of Indian cricket, crediting its growing talent pool that stretches across even the most remote regions of the country. Speaking during the 50th-year celebration of Mount Joy Cricket Club, Dravid shared how the strong club cricket culture has helped Indian cricket move beyond its historical reliance on city players and create a more diverse, powerful national team.
Dravid, who played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup victory, explained that Indian cricket is no longer dominated by talent from major cities alone. Instead, players from smaller towns are now stepping onto the national stage, thanks to access to better infrastructure and opportunities throughout the country. He reflected on the growing competitiveness of the Ranji Trophy, noting that no team can be underestimated today, unlike in previous decades.
Rise of Talent from All Corners of India
Dravid highlighted how the Indian cricket scene has drastically changed, with players now emerging from all parts of the country, not just the major cities.
This shift is largely due to the club cricket structure that provides opportunities and facilities to young players from smaller towns.
Dravid praised this inclusive system, noting that it reflects in the improved quality of domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.
He pointed out that every team in the South Zone, for example, is now highly competitive, which wasn’t the case in earlier years.

Dravid also lauded the strong foundation provided by club cricket, particularly in Karnataka, where he started his own career.
He stressed the need for a robust club system to ensure cricket remains accessible to all, and that talent is not concentrated in just a few places.
According to Dravid, ensuring young boys and girls from all over the country have access to quality infrastructure is essential for maximising India’s cricket potential.
He reflected fondly on his own experience playing club cricket, where he learned invaluable lessons from senior players.
