Rahul Dravid, one of Indian cricket’s most revered figures, has lauded the transformation of the sport in India, highlighting the shift from talent being concentrated in major cities to now emerging from all corners of the country. Speaking at the 50-year celebration of Mount Joy Cricket Club, Dravid explained how this diversity in talent has made Indian cricket a powerhouse on the global stage.
Talent Now Flourishing from Remote Areas
Historically, cricketing talent in India came predominantly from major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. Dravid pointed out that this is no longer the case, as talent from even the most remote regions now finds its way into the national cricketing landscape.
“If you look at Indian cricket today, it’s extremely strong and powerful. One of the big reasons for that is that talent comes from everywhere, from all over the country. Earlier, talented players from smaller places had to come to big cities to play cricket, but now, players are emerging from everywhere,” Dravid said, reflecting on the changing dynamics of talent distribution across the country.
This inclusivity, according to Dravid, has raised the level of competition in domestic cricket, particularly in the Ranji Trophy, India’s premier domestic tournament.
Rise in Competitiveness in Domestic Cricket
The increased influx of talent has elevated the competitiveness of tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, where no team can be underestimated. Dravid mentioned that earlier, matches against certain teams could be taken a bit lightly. However, that is no longer the case.
“You just look at the standard of the Ranji Trophy. In the old days when you played in the South Zone, other than playing Hyderabad or Tamil Nadu, you could take other teams a little lightly. But now, every team is strong, and there’s tough competition across the board,” Dravid added.
Importance of Strong Club Structures
Dravid also emphasized the need to maintain robust club cricket structures to ensure the continued growth of the game. He stressed that clubs across the country need to provide young cricketers with access to good infrastructure to harness their potential.
“We need clubs to be strong. Cricket shouldn’t be concentrated in just a few places or in the hands of a few people. We need to ensure that young boys and girls in every part of the country have access to good infrastructure,” Dravid remarked, advocating for a more egalitarian approach to cricket development.
Indian Cricket’s Global Success Under Dravid
Dravid’s comments come after India’s successful campaigns under his coaching, including their T20 World Cup victory in June 2024. He believes that the broadening of India’s talent pool has been one of the main reasons behind the country’s recent success in international cricket.
With Indian cricket evolving into a formidable force, Dravid’s vision of fostering talent from every part of the country appears to be coming to fruition. His call for strong club systems and widespread access to infrastructure resonates with the need for long-term sustainability in Indian cricket.

Dravid’s vision of a strong and inclusive cricketing ecosystem will be crucial in ensuring that India maintains its position as a global cricket powerhouse for years to come.
