After the T20 World Cup, the cricket world got back to its own track. The cricket-playing nations are going on with their further schedule. South Africa is all set to face Ireland in their next T20 assignment. As they announced their squad, Quinton de Kock missed his spot once again. With that, his place in the T20 team remains uncertain. South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter said he has no information about Quinton de Kock’s future in T20Is.
Walter on De Kock’s T20 Future:
In the South African cricket, Quinton de Kock is a star. But on a surprising note, After the T20 World Cup, the ace wicketkeeper-batter didn’t seen in national jersey. Quinton de Kock retired from Test cricket in 2021 and stepped away from ODIs after a stellar ICC Cricket World Cup in India last year.
Following the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, he missed three T20Is against the West Indies last month. He will also not play in the two T20Is against Ireland this month. Additionally, he does not currently hold a central contract.
While talking about Quinton de Kock’s availability, white-ball coach Rob Walter suggested there won’t be any clarity on his status for a while. Walter said, “I don’t know, to be dead honest. For the next little while, there will be no conversations between myself and Quinny as to whether he wants to play for South Africa again. I’ve left the door open for him to approach me if and when he wants to do that. That might never happen.”
Hint on De Kock’s Arrival:
Quinton de Kock retired from Test cricket in 2021 and from ODIs after last year’s World Cup. Despite this, he continued playing in franchise leagues like the IPL, BBL, and MLC. He also competed in the T20 World Cup, where he scored 253 runs and was South Africa’s top run-scorer. His performance was crucial to South Africa’s run to the final.
Walter emphasized that despite de Kock’s achievements, his spot in the team is not assured. Performance will be a key factor. He said, “There might be a conversation and also that conversation does initially mean it will lead to him being selected.’

Later he added, “We have to just allow him to have his space, to play league cricket and to do what he needs to do. What will become more and more important is performance. He’s not exactly old [de Kock is 31] so from here on in, it’s a performance-based conversation.”
