The esports version of Rocket League is here to stay. Rocket League competitive play will be revolutionized with Psyonix’s announcement of a significant overhaul of the RLCS format for 2025.
The RLCS World Championship 2025
The Rocket League World Championship 2025 will include 20 teams in total. The RLCS Worlds will feature four more teams than the current sixteen teams and a new format due to its expanded nature. Teams could still qualify for Worlds even if they didn’t perform well in the previous Majors because of the new system, which would include four teams that advanced from the Last Chance Open Qualifiers.
The four teams who make it through the Last Chance Open Qualifiers will face off against the four qualified teams from the four lowest-ranked regions in order of seeding. Based on each region’s teams’ average performance at the live RLCS Majors, these teams are selected. The top four teams from this Play-In stage will move on to the RLCS World Championship. This is the Play-In Stage.
New Format For RLCS Championship 2025
A new format for the 2025 Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) season has been revealed by Psyonix, the company behind the popular car football game Rocket League. Two Major events, a $5 million (~£3.7 million) prize pool, and a one-versus-one format will all be present at the RLCS in 2025.
The RLCS structure is being altered to “increase opportunities for fans, players, and teams to be able to compete and watch more,” according to a release. From the $4.3 million (~£3.2 million) that was offered during the 2024 season, the overall prize pool has climbed by $700,000 (~£530,000).
The three-versus-three competition will take place concurrently with the one-versus-one competition. The top 128 players from Europe, the top 64 players from South America (SAM), and the top 32 players from Asia-Pacific (APAC) will all receive cash prizes.
Last Chance For Open Qualifiers
In 2025, an online Last Chance Open Qualifier will also be held. The RLCS World Championship and Major 2 will be followed by the Last Chance Open Qualifier. The four most powerful regions will host the Last Chance Open Qualifier. The regions will be determined by averaging the teams’ performances from each region at the live RLCS Majors; these details have not yet been disclosed. There will be one team from each of the four regions that advances to the World Championship of Rocket League.
The Open Qualifiers’ Ranking Qualification
Ranking qualifying modifications are a minor but welcome change for elite teams. Every event’s top eight teams will move on to the next open qualifier’s later round.
This will guarantee that elite teams won’t have to compete in the open qualifiers’ preliminary rounds of each event. There are a few exceptions, though. The first Open qualification of each Split and the Last Chance qualification will not be included in this.
