After India’s series loss to New Zealand, Rohit Sharma defended spinners Ashwin and Jadeja, urging critics to consider their past contributions and stressing team effort.
In a pivotal moment for Indian cricket, captain Rohit Sharma defended senior spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja
The 113-run defeat in Pune has led to growing criticism, particularly directed at Ashwin and Jadeja, who endured underwhelming performances in the second Test.
Speaking after the match, Rohit Sharma addressed the media’s focus on the two spinners, both of whom have been key contributors to India’s success at home, helping the team secure 18 consecutive home series wins.
“I don’t think that’s fair, it’s the responsibility of all of us to make sure that we get the Test match wins. Not just the two guys, they have played a major role in helping us win 18 consecutive series at home. So couple of series, I’m not going to look too much into it especially with those two guys. They know exactly what happens and sometimes they’re allowed to have some bad games here and there. We got to be ready with other guys also to step in,” said Rohit.
Role of Team Unity in Bowling
Rohit’s defence of the veteran spinners reflects his broader philosophy of teamwork in cricket.
He pointed out that it’s not solely the job of Ashwin or Jadeja to deliver every time, but rather a shared responsibility among all bowlers.
“If Ash doesn’t do well, it’s Jadeja who needs to come to the party, or Washington Sundar, Kuldeep, or Axar Patel,” he explained.
Rohit’s message underscored the need for support within the bowling unit, especially in challenging conditions.
Sundar’s Breakthrough Performance
Washington Sundar’s impressive performance in the series was a positive take away for the team.
Sundar picked up seven wickets in the first innings and four in the second, signalling a strong future for the young spinner. Rohit expressed his satisfaction, saying,
“We’re really happy with that.” Yet, he insisted that it’s unrealistic to expect Ashwin and Jadeja to deliver consistently, especially given the highs and lows of the sport. “It can happen that things won’t work out for them,” Rohit added, urging patience with these seasoned players.
However, he urged patience with experienced players like Ashwin and Jadeja, acknowledging that every athlete can have off days.
With India’s World Test Championship (WTC) hopes on the line, Rohit’s leadership will be tested further.
India must win at least four out of the remaining six games to stay in contention, with the next Test set to take place at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 1.
