In the first T20I of the series between India and Afghanistan, Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s return to T20Is after over 14 months was marred by an unfortunate run-out. On just the second delivery of India’s innings, Rohit pushed a fuller-length ball towards the off-side, attempting a quick single. However, a mix-up with his opening partner, Shubman Gill, led to both batsmen ending up at the non-striker’s end. As a result, the wicketkeeper, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, successfully ran Rohit out.
Rohit Sharma was visibly upset at the dismissal, expressing his frustration with Shubman Gill on the field. Despite Gill’s attempts to explain the situation, Rohit was visibly angry and turned him down as both players returned to the dressing room. This marked Rohit’s fifth duck in T20Is, equaling the record held by Babar Azam, Mashrafe Mortaza, and William Porterfield.
Shubman Gill, who had looked promising during his innings, was later dismissed for 23 runs. With the return of Virat Kohli expected in the next match and Yashasvi Jaiswal possibly returning from injury, Shubman Gill might have to make way for the senior batter in the playing XI.
India’s bowlers had earlier put up a disciplined performance, restricting Afghanistan to 158/5 in their 20 overs. Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar were among the wicket-takers for India.
The series promises to be an exciting contest, and fans are eagerly anticipating the next match to see if India can bounce back after this setback.
