India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma made his much-anticipated return to the team on Day 4 of the ongoing Test match against Australia at Optus Stadium, Perth. After missing the first Test due to the birth of his second child, Rohit arrived in Perth on November 24 and was seen in the dressing room alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Rohit Sharma Arrives in Perth
The Indian team, under the interim leadership of Jasprit Bumrah, is on the brink of a historic victory in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With a commanding target of 534 set for Australia, India is poised to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Before heading to Perth, Rohit had opted for paternity leave to support his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, during the birth of their son. His decision to prioritise family has been widely respected, and fans are now eager to see him back in action.
He was spotted in the dressing room on Monday, November 25, watching the match and engaging with Gambhir. His presence is expected to bolster the team’s morale as they aim to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Rohit Sharma, despite limited preparation time in Australian conditions, is expected to feature in the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide starting December 6. His return has sparked selection debates, with right-handed opener KL Rahul addressing the media on the matter.
When asked about Rohit’s return and its impact on the lineup, Rahul told Channel 7:
“He’ll obviously walk in. We’ll have to wait and see. I’m sure the captain and the coach have it sorted in their heads. We are focused on taking seven wickets today and thinking about Adelaide when the time comes.”
Rahul, who scored 26 and 77 in Perth, added, “Hopefully, [I] get a chance in Adelaide.”
India’s Commanding Performance in Perth
India has dominated Australia at the Optus Stadium, thanks to standout performances from the batting lineup. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered an outstanding 161, while Virat Kohli added an unbeaten 100 in the second innings. India declared at 487/6, leaving Australia a steep target of 534.
Rahul also contributed a crucial 77, showcasing a mix of front-foot and back-foot excellence. However, his place in the Adelaide lineup remains uncertain, especially with Rohit’s return and the potential recovery of injured opener Shubman Gill. Gill, who fractured his left thumb during a match simulation against India A, is expected to be fit in time for the second Test.
Selection Challenges Loom for Adelaide Test
The return of Rohit Sharma and the anticipated availability of Shubman Gill present a pleasant selection headache for the Indian team. Both players bring immense value to the top order, but the team management will need to decide who partners Rohit as an opener.
KL Rahul’s solid performance in Perth has bolstered his case, while Gill’s impressive track record makes him a strong contender. With Jasprit Bumrah proving effective as a stand-in captain, India looks well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the day-night Test in Adelaide.
