Rohit Sharma Likely To Lead The Team In the T20 World Cup 2024

As the Indian squad against South Africa for India’s month long tour of South Africa gets announced today, there are only eight T20Is and an IPL left between now and the T20 World Cup next year. The 2024 T20 World Cup is set to be played in the USA and West Indies, with Indian management now shifting its focus to the T20 format, looking at the form of players and considering their potential to appear in the tournament.

Prior to today, the Indian management has been in a lot of contention about who will be leading the team in the T20 World Cup, following Hardik Pandya’s prolonged ankle injury which the all-rounder sustained during the 2023 World Cup. In absence of Hardik, Suryakumar Yadav was a convincing option but now it seems Team India skipper Rohit Sharma will be making a comeback in the T20 format.

An extravagant comeback

After a lot of discussions, it came out that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will skip the T20I series, particularly white-ball series against South Africa to be held in December. Both the cricketers want to focus on ODIs and Tests, while taking a break from the white-ball series. Meanwhile, on the question of leadership during the T20 World Cup, it has emerged that Rohit Sharma will be likely available for the big tournament and if he is available, it is likely that the 36-year old will definitely lead the team from the front.

The last T20 Rohit played

Rohit Sharma last played a T20 game against England in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2022 when India was knocked out against England. Since then, Rohit has not played a single T20 format game and in his absence, mainly Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav has the led the team in all the T20 games.
