Confirming his decision at a subsequent press conference, Rohit, who debuted in T20Is during the inaugural T20 World Cup against England in Durban in 2007, played 159 matches, scoring 4231 runs. He holds the record for the highest run tally in T20Is for India, with five centuries, and 32 half-centuries. Rohit also leaves as the most successful T20I captain with 50 victories.

He said, “This was my last [T20I] game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup,” said Rohit Sharma. “I wanted this badly. Very hard to put in words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line.”

Rohit Sharma’s mother, Purnima, disclosed that the Indian captain had planned to retire from T20Is regardless of the outcome of their T20 World Cup campaign. Leading the Men in Blue to their second T20 World Cup title, they clinched victory over South Africa in the final in Barbados by a margin of seven runs. Following the win, Rohit reunited with his emotional mother in the President’s box at Wankhede Stadium, where they shared a heartfelt hug and kiss to celebrate the triumph.

She said, “I have never thought I would see this day. Before going to the World Cup, he had come to meet us and said that he wanted to quit T20Is after this. I just said try to win. I was not feeling well and had a doctor’s appointment, but I still came as I wanted to see this day.”
