Rohit Sharma shares the new batting philosophy of the Mumbai Indians

For winning the game on Wednesday in Mohali, the Mumbai Indians had to chase down a huge 215 run total. Mumbai had their backs against the wall in what appeared to be an impossible chase when captain Rohit Sharma was caught with a duck. However, brilliant fifty-sixes from Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan were needed before Tilak Varma and Tim David’s late cameos propelled Mumbai to victory. They defeated their opponent by six wickets.

Earlier, Punjab lost early wickets but skipper Shikhar Dhawan batted with intent before being outfoxed by Chawla. However, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Punjab as Jitesh Sharma walked out. Along with Liam Livingstone he smashed Mumbai bowlers all over the park. Jofra Archer too was not spared. Both of them stayed unbeaten and stitched together a stand of 119 off 53 balls as Livingstone scored 82 off 42 balls and Jitesh Sharma ended with 49 off 27 balls to take Punjab to a mammoth total of 214.

This marks their fourth successful chase this season, cementing their position as one of the most formidable teams in the Indian Premier League. Despite an early setback with the loss of Rohit Sharma for a duck, the Mumbai Indians bounced back with Ishan Kishan smashing 75 runs and Suryakumar Yadav mesmerizing with 66. The duo’s partnership of 116 runs in just 9.1 overs proved to be the turning point of the match, as Punjab’s bowlers were sent for a ride. Arshdeep Singh in particular had a forgettable outing, conceding 66 runs in just 3.5 overs. The Mumbai Indians’ strong performance in the last two matches has given them the much-needed momentum going forward in the IPL.

Rohit Sharma was a pleased captain at the end of the match. He lauded Kishan and SKY for their wonderful partnership. “SKY has been doing that for a couple of overs. To play behind the wicket is his strength. He utilised it well. Kishan and SKY batted brilliantly,” Rohit said.

Rohit also talked about how he wanted his team to bat. Things were discussed before the auction that what would be the mantra of MI’s new batting lineup. 

“Before the start of the season, we had a chat as to how we wanted to play our cricket. Not to think of the results too much. We want to go out there and just express ourselves. You will lose games here and there. We want to stick to this template,” Rohit said. 

With today’s win, MI are looking threatening at the back end of the tournament and looking all set to qualify for the playoffs. They have jumped to sixth position in the points table and are knocking the doors to enter the top 4.
