Ruturaj Gaikwad to Lead Rest of India During Irani Cup, Dhruv Jurel, Ishan Kishan, and Yash Dayal Also Named in the Squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad will captain the Rest of India (RoI) team for the upcoming ZR Irani Cup 2024. This prestigious match is set to take place against the Mumbai team, the reigning champions of the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, from October 1 to 5 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Squad Announcement and Key Players

In a statement released by the BCCI, it was confirmed that wicketkeeper batter Dhruv Jurel and fast bowler Yash Dayal have been selected for the Rest of India squad. However, their participation is contingent upon their non-involvement in India’s second Test match against Bangladesh, which begins on September 27. The BCCI noted, “Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have been selected in the Rest of India squad, and their participation is subject to them not being involved in the second Test match against Bangladesh.”

Additionally, Sarfaraz Khan, who has been retained in the Indian squad for the second Test, will be released to represent Mumbai if he is not required for the match. This strategic move allows Mumbai to bolster their lineup with experienced players while ensuring that emerging talents are given opportunities.

One notable inclusion in the Rest of India squad is wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, who is making a return to red-ball cricket. His selection alongside Dhruv Jurel highlights a competitive spirit within the squad as both players vie for a chance to showcase their skills. Kishan’s performance will be closely watched as he aims to solidify his position ahead of future international assignments.

The inclusion of players like Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur adds depth to their team, making them a strong contender against the Rest of India. The anticipation surrounding this matchup is heightened by Mumbai’s rich cricketing history and their recent success in domestic tournaments.
