The ‘Gabbar’ Era

Shikhar Dhawan, the left-handed opening batsman, has announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket.

In a social media post, Dhawan shared that it’s time to move on and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for India.

Dhawan, who made his debut for India in 2010, leaves behind an impressive record. He scored 24 centuries in 269 international matches, with 17 hundreds in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and seven in Test matches.

He accumulated 6793 runs in 167 ODIs at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 91.35, making him one of only eight ODI batsmen with over 5000 runs at a 40-plus average and a 90-plus strike rate. His last ODI was in December 2022 against Bangladesh.

Dhawan also made significant contributions in Test cricket, scoring 2315 runs in 34 matches at an average of 40.61. He is particularly remembered for his explosive debut in 2013, where he scored 187 runs against Australia, including the fastest century by a debutant.

Dhawan’s peak came in 2013, when he scored 1162 runs in 26 ODIs at an average of 50.52.

He played a key role in India’s victory at the Champions Trophy that year, where he was the top scorer. His opening partnership with Rohit Sharma became one of the most successful in ODI history.
