R. Sai Sudharsan, the promising young cricketer, is making waves in First-Class cricket and is on the cusp of earning his first Indian Test cap. Following a stellar Ranji Trophy season and consistent performances for India A, Sudharsan’s determination to break into the national squad has never been stronger.
A Breakthrough Season
Sudharsan’s journey began with an impressive 572-run season in the Ranji Trophy with Tamil Nadu during 2022-23, where he scored two centuries. This performance laid a solid foundation for his future endeavors. He further solidified his case with 221 runs in four innings for India A against England Lions earlier this year, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
In addition to these achievements, Sudharsan contributed a vital fifty for Rest of India against Madhya Pradesh in the Irani Trophy. Despite being slated for a debut against England in Dharamshala, an upper-back injury sidelined him, allowing fellow left-hander Devdutt Padikkal to take his place.
The Duleep Trophy Opportunity
Currently participating in the Duleep Trophy, Sudharsan views this tournament as a crucial platform to demonstrate his skills. “I’m not thinking in terms that I have to play in the Indian squad. I’m not thinking along those lines. But as a cricketer, this [Duleep Trophy] is a great platform and opportunity where it feels like a Test match with every game we play,” he stated.
However, his performance in the first two matches has been modest. In the opening round, he scored seven and 22 runs for India C on a challenging wicket favoring pace bowlers. In the second match against India B, he managed 43 runs on a batting-friendly track but could not convert it into a big score.
Learning and Adapting
Despite these setbacks, Sudharsan remains optimistic about his development as a player. He believes that facing high-quality opposition and adapting to various conditions is crucial for honing his skills. “Even the last game we played felt like a Test match… I feel that is exposing us to different conditions, and I feel that is helping me get better as a batter,” he explained.
His recent stint with Surrey in the English County Championship has also contributed significantly to his growth. Although he has had limited appearances, scoring 281 runs at an average of 35, his century against Hampshire indicates that he is finding his rhythm in challenging conditions.
Balancing Formats
While Sudharsan has primarily opened throughout his career, he has adapted to batting lower down the order at Surrey. “Batting at six was a different experience and challenge because you need to play with all-rounders… So, it was a new experience for me,” he noted.
Sudharsan’s versatility across formats has allowed him to thrive even in limited-overs cricket. He made his One-Day International debut against South Africa last year and scored two fifties in three matches. Additionally, during IPL 2024, he became the fastest Indian player to reach 1,000 runs in the tournament’s history, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record.
Future Aspirations
As Sudharsan looks ahead, he remains focused on fulfilling his role within the team while capitalizing on every opportunity that comes his way. “I believe in it [the grind]. I think that consistency is what will set me apart in the future,” he concluded.
