Former Sri Lanka captain and ex-chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya announced on Monday that he will take over as head coach after Chris Silverwood resigned. Silverwood’s decision came in the wake of Sri Lanka’s early exit from the T20 World Cup. Jayasuriya, 55, revealed that Sri Lanka Cricket had requested him to step into the coaching role. Sanath will lead the national team in the upcoming white-ball series against India this month and during their tour of England in August. Former selector for the Sri Lanka cricket team Sanath Jayasuriya has admitted that Sri Lanka Cricket reached out to him for the head coach position. Jayasuriya admitted that he would be glad to take up the role.

“I have been asked to take over coaching and I am happy to do it,” Jayasuriya told AFP.

Jayasuriya, who played his last international match in 2011, has an impressive cricketing record, having represented Sri Lanka 586 times across all formats, scoring 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets.

Chris Silverwood, the former England coach, resigned for “personal reasons,” according to Sri Lanka Cricket.
