Sanath Jayasuriya Reveals Reason Behind Omission of Milan Rathnayake from Galle Test Against New Zealand

Sri Lanka’s interim coach Sanath Jayasuriya has addressed the dilemma of team selection ahead of the Galle Test against New Zealand. Despite the impressive performances of Milan Rathnayake, who took 11 wickets in his debut series and contributed valuable runs, he has been left out of the playing XI due to the unique conditions of the Galle pitch.

The Dilemma of Selection

Sri Lanka‘s recent success at The Oval, where their seam attack dismantled England for just 156 runs in the third innings, has created a “problem of plenty” for the team. However, as they prepare to play on one of the driest tracks in the world, Jayasuriya emphasized the need to balance the side with spinners instead of fielding four specialist quicks.

“When you come to the matter of a third fast bowler, you are talking about someone who is one of our best,” Jayasuriya stated regarding Rathnayake. He acknowledged Rathnayake’s contributions in his debut series, where he not only excelled with the ball but also made significant contributions with the bat, scoring 72 at Old Trafford and 43 at Lord’s.

“Unfortunately we can’t bring Milan into this XI. We can only play two quicks. Everyone knows what the Galle pitch is like. We already have filled those spots with our two best quicks: Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara,” he explained.

Acknowledging Rathnayake’s Contributions

Jayasuriya made it clear that Rathnayake’s omission was not a reflection of poor performance. He emphasized that it was a tough decision but necessary for team balance. “We have to mention Milan specifically because the things he did on his first tour should be appreciated,” he said. “He played like a mature cricketer. But in Galle, you have to bring spinners for the balance of the side.”

He reassured Rathnayake that his efforts had not gone unnoticed and that he would remain a vital part of future selections. “I’ve spoken to him personally and impressed on him that these are the reasons, so that he knows for sure,” Jayasuriya added.

Wicketkeeping Changes and Batting Order Adjustments

In addition to bowling changes, Sri Lanka faces another challenge with their wicketkeeping position. Dinesh Chandimal, who started as keeper in their last match, is now dealing with back issues sustained during that game. To accommodate this situation, Chandimal will be moved up to No. 3 in the batting order while Kusal Mendis takes over wicketkeeping duties and drops down to No. 7.

“Chandimal won’t keep, and that’s the team’s decision,” Jayasuriya confirmed. “We had to figure out who will come out at No. 3, and it’s very tough for a No. 3 batter to keep wickets.” He acknowledged that moving Chandimal up in the order was essential for team balance and emphasized that it was crucial to protect his well-being as a player.
