On a podcast with a youtuber ‘The Rao podcast’, the former Indian player Sanjay bangar said that he would like virat to be the test captain for the Indian team as he didn’t have captained very much.Â
Bangar said on the podcast that ” I personally feel that he should have continued slightly for longer as a test captain because he probably captained India in 65 test matches and one of the things I feel is that he could have probably continued as a test captain for a longer period”.
Sanjay Bangar’s View on Kohli’s Test Captaincy Decision
Sanjay Bangar, former India cricketer and batting coach, voiced his opinion that Virat Kohli should have extended his tenure as India’s Test captain. Bangar emphasized Kohli’s impact on the Test team, noting the significant achievements under his leadership, including the transformation of India into a dominant force in red-ball cricket. Kohli’s aggressive and passionate style of captaincy not only brought success but also instilled a sense of fearlessness among his teammates, leading India to 40 victories out of 68 matches.

Bangar, who worked closely with Kohli during his coaching stint with the Indian team, believes that Kohli’s experience and understanding of the game made him the ideal leader for the Test side. Bangar’s comments reflect a sentiment shared by many cricket enthusiasts who admired Kohli’s commitment and the brand of cricket he promoted. Despite stepping down, Kohli’s influence on the Indian Test side’s approach to the game remains evident, marking his captaincy as one of the most memorable in India’s cricketing history.
LEGACY OF VIRAT’S TEST CAPTAINCY
Under Virat’s captaincy the team managed to reach the finals of the World test championship in 2021 but his form was constantly questioned during his captaincy as he was not very consistent with scoring runs as this cost the team in the final of the tournament played with the Kiwis. In 2018 Kohli became the first Indian captain to win a test series in Australia which made him the most suitable captain for the format. Only 3 captains from India have won a test match at Lord’s in which Kohli is one of them. He made this possible in the India tour of England in 2021 after the WTC final. But because of the COVID the series was stopped and the chance to beat England in their home went away.

Kohli is considered as the successful test captain as the team was on the top of the ICC test rankings for 42 months during his captaincy. But in 2022 on 16 January, Kohli resigned as test captain after India lost the series in south Africa.
According to stats, Kohli has most test wins as a captain in which he played 68 test matches as a captain, and won 40 out of those which makes him a successful test captain of the Indian cricket team.
