Sanju Samson’s Early Struggles in Bangladesh T20I Series

Sanju Samson, a key player for India, recently opened up about his struggles during the first two T20I matches against Bangladesh.

Failing to make a significant impact with scores of 29 and 10, Samson admitted that he couldn’t make eye contact with head coach Gautam Gambhir, who had been consistently supporting him.

Samson shared that he felt the weight of Gambhir’s expectations and desperately wanted to perform well for the team.

“I agree that the relationship between a coach  and a player is very important. The coach trusts in your ability and you want to repay that trust by performing well for your team. In Hyderabad, I was determined and desperately wanted to show Gauti bhai that if you are backing me and giving me the chances, I won’t disappoint you,” Sanju Samson told journalist Vimal Kumar in an interview.

“In the Bangladesh T20I series, I didn’t score big in the first couple of matches and I was a bit hesitant to make eye contact with him but I told myself that apna time aayega (my time will come). So when I got that hundred in Hyderabad and the coach was clapping, I was delighted,” he added

His moment of redemption came in the third T20I when he smashed 111 runs off 47 balls, helping India dominate Bangladesh. This performance not only boosted his confidence but also reaffirmed his relationship with Gambhir.

Bond with Suryakumar Yadav

In addition to his redemption, Samson shared insights into his deep respect for Suryakumar Yadav, a fellow teammate.

“I don’t know how many people are aware of this but me and Surya go a long way since we have played a lot of junior cricket together. In fact, both of us also play for BPCL and we have spent a lot of time together discus

Samson was particularly touched by Suryakumar’s warmth and support when he scored his maiden T20I century, with Yadav embracing him at the non-striker’s end.

Samson praised Suryakumar’s rise as a cricketer, noting how hard work and dedication have made Yadav a consistent performer and now a leader for India.

This camaraderie, Samson believes, plays a key role in shaping team spirit and individual performances on the field.
