Sanju Samson credits coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav for their unwavering support after his poor form in Sri Lanka, which led to his stunning century in Hyderabad.
Sanju Samson Praises Team Backing After Sri Lanka Setback
Sanju Samson, after an exhilarating maiden T20I century against Bangladesh, revealed how coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav supported him during a tough phase. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Samson expressed his gratitude for the management’s faith in him after his failures during the Sri Lanka T20I series.
He said “I think a lot of credit has to go to the dressing room, the leadership group. I think the captain and the coach have been backing me like anything. I think, like I was a bit doubtful after a couple of ducks in Sri Lanka, that I will be getting a chance in the next series. But they backed me, and they kept on saying that we would back you no matter what. I just think we have committed, as a group, as a batting group, to go out and dominate each and every game we play in this format.”
Samson admitted that he doubted his chances of being selected for the next series after his poor performance in Sri Lanka. However, it was the leadership group, including Gambhir and Suryakumar, who assured him that he would be backed regardless of his failures. Their support allowed him to stay mentally strong, which resulted in his blistering knock of 111 off just 47 balls in the 3rd T20I against Bangladesh in Hyderabad.
Overcoming Doubts After Sri Lanka Tour
Samson’s tour of Sri Lanka in July was marked by a string of failures, leading to self-doubt about his place in the team. “I was doubtful of getting another chance after those ducks,” Samson said, reflecting on his struggles.
Despite the challenges, the team management, particularly Gautam Gambhir, clarified that he would continue to be backed. This trust helped Samson cope with the pressure, allowing him to bounce back spectacularly.
Learning to Deal with Pressure and Failure
The Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter shared his thoughts on dealing with the highs and lows of the game. “When the risk is high, there are bound to be failures,” he said, acknowledging that aggressive batting in T20 cricket comes with its challenges.
Babar Azam Set to be Dropped for Second Test Against England
“Three weeks before the series, I was very fortunate to get a message from the leadership group that I will be opening. So that gave me time for proper preparation. I went back to the Rajasthan Royals academy and was playing lots and lots against new balls. It helps a tiny bit that I was 10% more prepared in the series rather than the other series.” Samson said.
With experience in IPL and international cricket, Samson learned how to handle pressure. His ability to channel that into positive outcomes was evident in his record-breaking century, which played a crucial role in India’s mammoth total of 297, the second-highest in T20I history.
