Sanju Samson Set to Edge Out Ishan Kishan for Bangladesh T20I Series: Reports

Sanju Samson appears to have the edge over Ishan Kishan for a spot in India‘s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, according to reports. Both wicketkeeper-batters impressed in the recent Duleep Trophy, but Samson’s consistent performance seems to have swayed the selectors in his favor.

Duleep Trophy Performances

In the Duleep Trophy, Sanju Samson made a remarkable impact, scoring 196 runs, while Kishan managed 123 runs across four innings. Despite their impressive performances, the big question looms: can Samson’s recent form outweigh his previous struggles in T20Is, where he recorded two ducks against Sri Lanka in July? Given his strong showing in Anantapur, there is a growing belief that Samson could reclaim his spot in the national team.

Kishan, on the other hand, has been selected for the Irani Cup, a domestic tournament that concludes just a day before the first T20I against Bangladesh. While there’s always a possibility of a late call-up, it seems more likely that Samson will be given the nod to open the innings.

Ishan Kishan has also been active in domestic cricket, complying with selectors’ requests to participate in tournaments. His commitment to improving his game raises speculations about a potential recall to the Indian squad. Before being sidelined nearly a year ago for reasons unrelated to his performance, Kishan had nearly solidified his position in India’s white-ball setup and was even selected for the 50-over World Cup squad.

Opening Opportunities

With Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal expected to be excluded from the T20I squad due to their Test commitments, there is a pressing need for an opener. Samson’s experience may lead him to take on this role again, despite his previous challenges during the series against Sri Lanka.

Selectors are likely considering other options as well. Sai Sudarshan, who recently played a T20I in Zimbabwe, could be another contender for an opening position alongside Samson if he secures a spot in the squad.

The three-match T20I series against Bangladesh will be played in Gwalior, New Delhi, and Hyderabad from October 6 to 12. India will be looking to continue their dominance in the shortest format of the game and will be hoping that Samson can provide a solid start at the top of the order.
