February-March 2024 was a dream period for Sarfaraz Khan. He finally made his much-anticipated debut for India in the Test series against England, scoring an impressive 62 in his first innings. His aggressive knock was cut short by an unfortunate run-out involving Ravindra Jadeja, yet he continued to shine with scores of 68* and 56 in the subsequent innings. These performances marked him as a potential future star in Indian cricket. However, his last competitive game was on March 7, 2024, leaving a five-month gap without any First-Class cricket.
Relentless Training in the Off-Season
Despite the long hiatus from professional cricket, Sarfaraz’s commitment to his craft has not wavered. He returned to his native village in Uttar Pradesh, where he embarked on a rigorous fitness regime. “There is nothing called off-season for me,” Sarfaraz told The Indian Express. “I would wake up by 4:15 AM and start my day with long-distance running by 4:30 AM. By the end of the month, I was able to run 5 km in 30-31 minutes.”
His training plan, devised with the help of his father Naushad, was structured to enhance his fitness, fielding, and batting skills. The mornings were dedicated to long-distance running and gym workouts, while the evenings focused on batting practice. Sarfaraz emphasized the importance of practicing on turf wickets, as opposed to indoor facilities, to better prepare for the challenges of real match conditions.
Uncertain Future but Focused Preparation
As India’s Test team gears up for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, starting September 19, Sarfaraz’s position in the squad remains uncertain. With established players like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer returning, the competition for a spot in the middle order has intensified. Despite the uncertainty, Sarfaraz remains focused on his preparation and has tempered his expectations.
“I’m not looking at the Bangladesh series,” Sarfaraz admitted. “But I’ve to follow the process and be ready. This (playing matches) is very important for me… I have zero expectations… But I’ll be ready if the opportunity arises.”
