“Shami For Me Was The Player Of The Match”, Says Wasim Akram While Applauding Mohammad Shami For His Performance Against NZ

The Men in Blue pulled off a remarkable performance against New Zealand on October 22nd, which came to be counted as the 21st match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. After winning the toss, India chose to bowl first with Shami taking a fifer in his first game of the tournament. Latham’s men could manage to set a target of 274 with the help of a solid partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra, the former scoring 130 runs.

India successfully chased it well, with Rohit Sharma giving off a brilliant start to the innings. Later on, after losing a quick few wickets, Virat Kohli finished off the line as always, who was the chasemaster scoring 95 runs for India and missed out on breaking Sachin Tendulkar‘s record of 49 ODI centuries. Therefore, Virat Kohli and Mohammad Shami were the heroes with the bat and the ball against the Black Caps.

Akram heaps praise on Shami

Mohammad Shami‘s extraordinary five-wicket haul toppling New Zealand‘s batting line-up made him earn a lot of appreciation from Indian fans and cricketers. Ahead of the win, former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram applauded Shami remarking “This squad looks good even without Pandya. If he is fit then well and good. It will be difficult to drop Shami now. I feel India shouldn’t risk Pandya because if it’s an injury to a hamstring or quad, then although you feel good initially, you could pull a muscle in the match. So let him recover 100 percent and then you can play him.”

Adapting to newer conditions

Younis went on further to add that “Credit to the team management that whenever any player in the squad comes into the XI, he seems ready. When Shami’s ball hits the seam, it can deviate either way. That’s why I think Shami for me was the player of the match.”

Not only Waqar Younis, former Indian cricketer S. Sreesanth also appreciated Shami for his effortless contribution to the win. He was impressed with Shami for how well he adjusted to the team’s requirements and was able to produce the best outcome.
