Shane Watson Backs Steven Smith to Continue as Australia’s Test Opener

Shane Watson has expressed his support for Steven Smith to continue as Australia’s opener ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. Despite Smith’s recent struggles, Watson attributes his performance to technical issues rather than his batting position. As Australia also awaits updates on Cameron Green‘s fitness, Watson believes Green should take up the No. 4 spot if he plays.

Watson’s Confidence in Smith’s Opening Role

As Australia prepares for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, former Test opener Shane Watson has voiced his support for Steven Smith to maintain his position at the top of the batting order.

Watson, speaking at the launch of the International Masters League in Mumbai, emphasised that Smith’s decision to open should be honoured, stating, “Steve Smith made the call to be able to go and open, and I think he should stay there.”

Smith’s move to open came after David Warner‘s retirement, a decision that has sparked considerable debate.

Watson believes that, despite Smith’s mixed performance at the opener position—scoring only 171 runs at an average of 28.50—his batting technique is to blame rather than his placement in the order.

Watson stated, “I believe the reason why he didn’t do so well over the previous couple of Test matches is just that he was a little bit off with his technique.”

Cameron Green’s Future as a Key Player

The Australian setup faces additional complications as they await updates on Cameron Green’s fitness for the series.

Green, who has shown impressive form, including a match-winning 174 not out against New Zealand, was flown home from the UK due to lower back soreness.

Watson, initially an advocate for Green as an opener, has since revised his stance, now seeing Green as a strong candidate for the No. 4 position.

Watson’s comments reflect the growing uncertainty surrounding Australia’s lineup as they gear up for a challenging series against India, where every decision regarding player roles could prove crucial.

Venue Controversy: Gabba vs. Perth

In addition to the opening position debate, Watson expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to host the first Test in Perth instead of the traditional Gabba.

He noted that the Gabba presents greater challenges for visiting teams due to its unique conditions, which include bounce and swing.

Watson stated, “I always just love the Gabba as being the place for the touring team to be able to come in and have to try and just take on the Australian conditions at their most challenging.”
