In the 26th match of the T20 World Cup 2024 has seen an exciting clash between West Indies and New Zealand. Two big names of Group C set the stage on fire. While batting first, West Indies was in trouble. They started losing consecutive wickets. In the sixth over, West Indies was on 22/4. After that, Sherfane Rutherford took the helm and pushed his team closer to winning. He scored a crucial half-century and played an unbeaten knock of 68 runs in 39 balls. That knock was one of the reasons for the win.
After that exciting contribution, Sherfane Rutherford was awarded the Player of the Match Award. After receiving the award, he reflected on the match, Rutherford said, “Want to thank God for the opportunity. I was in IPL for two months. I was preparing even though I wasn’t playing. I was preparing for this.”
Later he added, “To take it deep was the plan. Me and (Daren) Sammy had a talk. We spoke of taking it deep and just keep rotating the strike as I can make up for it later on.”
On the Thrilling Last Two Overs:
West Indies seized momentum in the last two overs of their batting innings, scoring 37 crucial runs that shifted the game in their favor. Rutherford’s pivotal contribution was instrumental in this turnaround, supported by effective bowling and fielding efforts that complemented their strong finish in the first innings.
While talking about those two overs, he said, “Looking at their bowling line up I knew they were short of two overs and I was telling myself to take it deep. Wanted to maximise on those overs.”
“That was the plan and I think it did that well. Hopefully the start of something to come. I will have chicken curry for tonight.”, he concluded.
