Gujarat Greats captain Shikhar Dhawan displayed his excellent form in the ongoing Legends League Cricket 2024, notching up his maiden half-century in Match 4 against Southern Super Stars. The match took place on September 23 at the Barkatullah Khan Stadium, Jodhpur.
Shikhar Dhawan shines
Chasing a target of 145, Dhawan gave Gujarat a strong start, scoring 25 runs off his first 12 balls. He formed a solid 63-run partnership with Morne van Wyk, who was dismissed for 15 off 19 balls. Dhawan brought up his half-century in 37 balls, eventually scoring 52 off 48 deliveries, including three boundaries and three sixes. Unfortunately, Dhawan’s efforts went in vain as Gujarat Greats managed only 118/9 in their 20 overs, falling short by 26 runs. Apart from Dhawan, no other Gujarat batter made significant contributions, with key players like Lendl Simmons (7), Mohammad Kaif (5), and Asghar Afghan (3) dismissed cheaply. Manan Sharma added a brief 10 runs.
Pawan Negi was the standout bowler for the Southern Super Stars, taking three wickets and restricting Gujarat’s chase. Despite Dhawan’s impressive innings, Gujarat’s batters crumbled under pressure, with Negi leading the Southern Super Stars to victory.
Earlier, the Southern Super Stars struggled with the bat as well but were anchored by a brilliant knock from Chaturanga de Silva. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 53 off 28 balls, hitting six boundaries and two sixes. His innings propelled Southern Super Stars to 144/9. Gujarat’s Manan Sharma was in exceptional form with the ball, picking up six wickets for just 17 runs in his four overs, but his efforts couldn’t prevent Gujarat’s defeat.
With this win, Southern Super Stars claimed a 26-run victory, securing two valuable points in the tournament.
