In the opening match of the Duleep Trophy 2024, Shreyas Iyer, captaining Team D, was dismissed for a mere 9 runs, while Devdutt Padikkal fell for a four-ball duck. The match played at the Rural Development Trust Stadium, Anantapur, saw Team D face early setbacks after losing their captain and Padikkal in quick succession. Both players were eager to make an impression, particularly Iyer, who is eyeing a return to the Indian Test squad after being dropped earlier this year.
Shreyas Iyer’s Struggles Continue
The 2024–25 Duleep Trophy is the 61st edition of India‘s domestic first-class cricket tournament. It runs from 5 to 22 September 2024.Â
This year, four teams—A, B, C, and D—are competing, instead of the usual zonal format used in previous years.
Shreyas Iyer, after a string of low scores, had hoped to make a strong start in the Duleep Trophy to secure a spot in the Indian Test squad.
However, he was dismissed for just 9 runs, edging a delivery from pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak to the wicketkeeper.
This continues a difficult phase for Iyer, who had been omitted from India’s Test squad during the England series after failing to perform in the Buchi Babu tournament as well.

Devdutt Padikkal’s Tough Outing
Padikkal, who made a remarkable Test debut with a score of 65 against England, struggled in this match.
Facing his Karnataka teammate Vyshak, Padikkal was dismissed for a duck after just four deliveries, attempting a drive on the off-side.Â
With competition for a middle-order spot heating up, Padikkal will be looking to bounce back in the upcoming matches, especially after an underwhelming Maharaja T20 Trophy where he managed only 253 runs in 11 games.
