Shubman Gill Named Punjab’s “State Icon” for Lok Sabha Polls

In preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Punjab has appointed cricketer Shubman Gill as a “state icon.” Gill’s designation underscores his significant role in the state, symbolizing the spirit of Punjab. His appointment aims to encourage voter participation and promote civic engagement among the populace as the elections approach.

Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer’s Thought of Making Gill a State Icon:

In an announcement on Monday, Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C revealed that cricketer Shubman Gill would spearhead various voter awareness campaigns to achieve a 70 percent voter turnout, dubbed “Is Vaar 70 Paar,” for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Punjab aims to surpass its previous voter turnout of 65.96% recorded in the 2019 elections across its 13 locals.

Gill, a prominent figure among sports enthusiasts, particularly the youth, has been designated as a “state icon” to galvanize voter participation. His influence is expected to resonate widely, encouraging greater civic engagement and electoral involvement.

Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C emphasized the importance of identifying areas with historically low voter turnout and strategizing to bolster participation. During a recent meeting with all deputy commissioners of Punjab, they were tasked with pinpointing such regions for targeted intervention.

Awareness campaigns led by Shubman Gill in these identified areas are anticipated to inspire voters and amplify turnout. By leveraging Gill’s popularity and influence, the electoral commission aims to bridge gaps in voter engagement and foster a more robust democratic process across Punjab.

Previous Election’s State Icon:

Previously, renowned Punjabi singer Tarsem Jassar was appointed as a ‘state icon’ and will also lead similar voter awareness campaigns, according to the CEO. He expressed optimism that the influence of both Shubman Gill and Tarsem Jassar would encourage first-time voters to cast their ballots and inspire citizens of all age groups to participate actively in the electoral process. 

The Lok Sabha elections are slated to occur in April-May, and the electoral commission is intensifying efforts to ensure a high voter turnout. By enlisting influential figures like Gill and Jassar, the commission aims to engage diverse segments of the population and emphasize the importance of exercising the democratic right to vote. Their participation highlights a strong effort to encourage people to participate in elections and uphold democratic principles in Punjab before the upcoming polls.
