Shubman Gill’s Perth Test Participation Hangs on Final Call, Says Morkel
India and Australia are gearing up for the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024, beginning November 22.
With India eyeing a third consecutive series win in Australia and the Aussies eager to reclaim the trophy, the series promises high-stakes cricket.
Amid preparations, Shubman Gill‘s thumb injury has cast a shadow on India’s top order ahead of the opening Test at Perth.
India‘s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, provided clarity on Gill’s condition during a press conference on November 20, stating that a final decision will be made on the morning of the Test.
“He (Gill) is improving on a day-by-day basis. We will take a call on the morning of the Test. He played well in the match simulation in the build-up. So fingers crossed,” Morkel shared optimistically.
Morkel highlighted Gill’s improvement, noting his performance during practice. Despite the injury, Gill scored an unbeaten 42 runs in the second attempt of match simulations, showcasing resilience and determination.

Gill’s Significance to the Team
Gill’s ability to counter pace and bounce makes him a vital player on Australian soil.
His impressive average of 51.80 across six innings in Australia, including the iconic 91-run knock at The Gabba, has been instrumental in past successes.
If deemed unfit, India may face challenges in stabilising their top order, adding pressure to the batting lineup.
