Young South African fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has made waves in the cricketing world after his stellar performance against the West Indies in the U19 World Cup 2024. Maphaka’s exceptional bowling figures of 5/38 earned him the Player of the Match award.
What caught everyone’s attention was Maphaka’s celebratory style, which resembled Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah‘s trademark ‘I don’t know’ celebration. In a video shared on the ICC’s Instagram page, Maphaka explained that he had decided to adopt the celebration after his brother suggested it to him before the World Cup.
In a bold statement, Maphaka expressed his confidence by saying, “Jasprit, you’re a great bowler. Hopefully, I am better than you.”
Maphaka’s crucial breakthroughs helped South Africa secure a victory as they defended a target of 286 against the West Indies. His performance was particularly notable as he took important wickets to turn the game in South Africa’s favor.
Reflecting on his performance, Maphaka expressed his satisfaction, stating, “It’s definitely a great way to get the World Cup started off. We knew we had it in us. We were just waiting for that performance. I am happy it could come out today and hopefully a few more.”
Maphaka’s next challenge will be against England in the U19 World Cup, where he will aim to continue his impressive form and help his team secure another victory.
