Surrey Cricket Club has signed Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson for the first part of the Vitality Blast. Johnson, who impressed during the Oval Invincibles’ victory in last year’s men’s Hundred, will join Surrey to fill the gap left by their England players who are heading to the T20 World Cup.
Johnson, a left-arm fast bowler, will be available for the first eight group-stage matches of the Blast. Currently playing for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, Johnson was not included in Australia‘s T20 World Cup squad.
Surrey’s squad has been impacted by the absence of England players Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Reece Topley, and Will Jacks, all of whom are part of England‘s World Cup squad. Additionally, all-rounder Jamie Overton is sidelined due to a back injury.
Surrey had initially agreed on a deal with Australian Aaron Hardie, but Cricket Australia withdrew him from the arrangement due to workload concerns.
Johnson expressed his excitement about joining Surrey, stating, “I’m very excited to join Surrey and I have some fantastic memories from playing at the Kia Oval last year.”
