Sports Fraternity Comes In Solace With Vinesh Phogat Over Olympics 2024 Upset

Paris 2024: Sachin Tendulkar reacts to Vinesh Phogat’s finals fiasco as she gets disqualified from wrestling match due to weight issues. 7 August 2024 was a disappointing day for Vinesh Phogat. The Wrestler, who hails from India had just defeated Japan’s Yui Saki.

Sachin Tendulkar and others react on Phogat’s disqualification

The Indian sports community has reacted strongly following Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024. The IOC barred her from competing in her 50 kg gold medal bout. This happened because Phogat failed to make weight on the morning of the event.

“Nisha Dahiya and Vinesh Phogat, your courage and determination have inspired the entire nation. Nisha, fighting through injury with such spirit was truly remarkable. Vinesh, despite the heartbreak of disqualification, your incredible journey to the finals and victory against Yui Susaki have earned our deepest admiration.” Cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar wrote in an X post.

PV Sindhu has won 2 olympic titles. Yet she got ousted from the Paris 2024 events in her first match. Sindhu supported Vinesh as well on an X post.

“Dear @Phogat_Vinesh, you will always be a champion in our eyes. I was deeply hoping you could win the gold. The little time I spent with you at PDCSE was watching a woman with a superhuman will fight to get better. It was inspiring. I am here for you always, sending all the universe’s positivity your way” posted PV Sindhu.

What the IOA said in their statement

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) released a statement confirming Vinesh’s disqualification early today. The disheartening statement requested to respect Phogat’s privacy.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg category. Despite the team’s best efforts throughout the night, she weighed in a few grams over the 50kg limit this morning. At this time, no further comments will be made. We kindly request that Vinesh’s privacy be respected during this difficult period.” the IOA said.
