Australia’s star allrounder Cameron Green is set to undergo lower spine surgery, ruling him out of action for at least six months. The decision comes after Green was diagnosed with his fifth stress fracture in his lower back, following his participation in Australia’s tour of the UK in September 2024. Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed the surgery as a long-term solution to Green’s recurring injury issues.
The procedure involves the insertion of screws and a titanium cable into Green’s lower back to stabilize the affected area and prevent further stress fractures. This surgical method has been previously employed successfully by other cricketers, including Jason Behrendorff, James Pattinson, and Ben Dwarshuis, who all faced similar injuries.
Recovery and Timeline
The recovery period for such surgery can vary, but CA estimates that Green could return in six months, though his participation may initially be limited to batting. This timeframe rules him out of several key series for Australia, including the five-Test series against India, a tour of Sri Lanka, and the Champions Trophy. There is some hope that Green could make a comeback for the World Test Championship final in June 2025 if Australia qualifies.
Green’s injury is a major blow to Australia’s plans, especially given his allrounder role. The medical team was surprised by the injury, particularly as Green had undergone regular scans, which showed no issues leading up to his bowling stint in the UK. In total, he bowled 21.2 overs across five T20Is and two ODIs on that tour.
A Recurring Issue
Green has a long history of back issues, having suffered from stress fractures in his junior years and throughout his career. While CA had successfully managed Green’s workload in recent years, his latest setback has raised concerns. Despite a reduced bowling workload in 2024 compared to previous years, the fracture still occurred, baffling medical staff.
The surgery Green will undergo has been effective for many players, including Behrendorff, who returned to cricket successfully after the procedure in 2019. However, the recovery period can be lengthy, with some players taking up to 12 months to return to their previous form.
Impact on Australia’s Campaign
Green’s absence will significantly impact Australia’s balance in upcoming series. Known for his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, his loss leaves a void in the team’s middle order and allrounder options. Mitchell Marsh, another key allrounder, will also be closely managed to avoid similar injuries, especially with the Test series against India and the 2025 World Test Championship on the horizon.
As Green prepares for surgery, Australia’s medical staff will focus on his rehabilitation with hopes for a successful recovery and return to international cricket, possibly in time for Australia’s next summer.
