Steve Smith Faces Online Trolling After Batting Struggles in Australia Day Test

After the Test series against Pakistan, Australia is facing West Indies in a two-match Test series. In the first Test match, Australia registered an amazing win. Even in the second Test match, Aussie bowlers played exceptionally well. But Steve Smith failed as the opener yet again. After consecutive failures, he received immense trolls on social media.

New Opener’s Role and Failure:

After the Test series against Pakistan, David Warner retired from Test cricket after having an exciting career. After his exit, Team Australia was looking for an opener. The selectors went with Steve Smith for the opener’s role. Smith batted in every position in the team. It was a new role for him. In the Test series against West Indies, Smith played as the opener of the team.

In another setback for the declining superstar, Smith was out lbw for just six in the opening over of Australia’s first innings against the West Indies, responding to the West Indies’ score of 311. Kemar Roach, the West Indian veteran, dismissed Smith with an in-seaming delivery, questioning the effectiveness of Smith’s trademark step across the crease. Despite showing an attacking approach, a review confirmed Smith’s dismissal for six runs, highlighting concerns about his current struggles as an opener. The Sydney-born cricketer had previously scored 12 and 11 in the first Test but faced difficulties once again in the latest innings.

Despite being the fourth-highest run-scorer for Australia in Tests, accumulating over 9,500 runs, Steve Smith’s shift to opening the batting has proven to be a disappointing failure. The esteemed batter has struggled, especially since the start of the previous year, with an average of only 40 in 16 Tests. This marks a noticeable dip in his performance, raising questions about the effectiveness of the decision to place him at the top of the order.

The Trolling on Social Media:

After that batting failure, Aussie star Steve Smith received some harsh trolling. People are going crazy on the internet. A handle named Jupiter wrote, “Steve Smith if you can statpad against Windies, then you are done ffs.”

Another one said, “Time to stop pretending Steve Smith is a Test opener and Cam Green is a batsman before we come up against a decent test team #australiadaytest.”

Another account named Dinda Academy wrote, “Steve Smith was to replace David Wrner as opener. Seems to have become Marcus Harris as opener.”
