As the cricketing world gears up for the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Australian batter Steve Smith has expressed his admiration for the Indian team, noting their outstanding performance over the past two years. The series, which begins on November 22 at Perth, promises to be an exciting contest as both teams vie for supremacy.
India’s Dominance in Recent Series
Over the years, India has established a notable upper hand in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, winning the last four series against Australia, including two victories on Australian soil in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons. This impressive record has seen India win the trophy 10 times, while Australia has claimed it five times, with their last series victory coming in the 2014-15 season. Smith acknowledged this trend, stating, “India have been playing outstanding cricket. We have not beaten India in the last two times they have come out here.”
Speaking to Star Sports, Smith conveyed his excitement for the upcoming series, highlighting the quality of both teams. “It is going to be a great series. You know, India have been playing outstanding cricket. We have been playing really good cricket the last couple of years,” he said. Smith’s confidence is rooted in the fact that Australia has not won against India in their last two encounters on home turf, making this series a crucial opportunity for redemption.
Smith’s Role as Opener
This series holds particular significance for Smith as he steps into the role of Test opener following David Warner‘s retirement. Although his performances as an opener have been mixed—scoring 171 runs at an average of 28.50 in four matches—Smith remains determined to prove his worth. He noted, “I like to stand up in the big series and do well and help the team.” His ability to adapt will be vital as Australia seeks to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
