Sunil Gavaskar expects a resurgent Virat Kohli in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, banking on his hunger for runs and strong past record in Australia.
Sunil Gavaskar on Kohli’s Hunger for Runs
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to bounce back in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar emphasized Kohli’s hunger for runs, especially after a challenging series against New Zealand where he struggled with the bat.
“Because he hasn’t got runs against New Zealand, he’ll be very, very hungry. Even in that Adelaide Test, where in the second innings we got all out for 36, in the first innings, Kohli got 70-plus runs (74 runs) before being run out. He’s consistently performed at Adelaide, so it’s a familiar ground for him. Before Adelaide, it’s Perth, where he played one of the finest Test centuries in 2018-19. A terrific hundred. Having performed on these grounds, he’ll feel that extra bit of confidence. Of course, you need a bit of luck at the start, but if he gets off to a good start, he will get big runs,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Gavaskar also highlighted Kohli’s memorable innings at Adelaide, where he scored 74 runs in 2020 before a run-out.
Reflecting on his century in Perth during the 2018-19 series, Gavaskar believes Kohli’s past success at these grounds will inspire him.
However, he cautioned that a solid start and a bit of luck are crucial for the Indian talisman to regain his form.
Ricky Ponting’s Concerns Over Kohli’s Form
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has expressed scepticism about Kohli’s form, citing his lack of centuries in recent years.
“I saw a stat the other day about Virat—it said he’s only scored two Test hundreds in the last five years. That didn’t seem right to me, but if that is accurate, then that’s a concern. There probably wouldn’t be anyone else still playing international cricket as a top-order batsman who’s only scored two Test match hundreds in five years,” Ponting had said.
Despite these observations, Kohli’s track record in Australia remains impressive, and Indian fans hope he can silence critics with strong performances in this high-stakes series.
