The Indian men’s cricket team is moving ahead in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with 3 victories in the 3 matches they have played, with small margins in 2 of these matches.
The men in blue are at the top in the Group A points table with 7 points to their name as they look forward to a match against Afghanistan on 20 June as their first match of the Super Eight.
India was scheduled to play against Canada for their last match of the group stage but the match got abandoned even without a toss taking place. Even though it was not raining in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the scheduled time of the match, the outfield was already wet due to downpour earlier in the day.
“ICC should not host the matches where…” Gavaskar expresses discontent
Ex-Indian cricketer and all time legend Sunil Gavaskar, who is now a commentator, was left unhappy due to India’s match against Canada getting abandoned.
Gavaskar held the ICC responsible for the unprofessional keeping of the ground at the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida. Sunil Gavaskar said,
“ICC should not host the matches where there are no covers to cover the entire ground. You just can’t cover the pitch and let the other parts of the ground get wet”.
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan bashed the ICC — cricket’s global governing body and tournament organisers — for not having enough covers to cover the entire ground.
“How we don’t have more covers to cover all the ground is beyond me .. all the money in the game yet we still get games called off for wet outfields !!!! #T20WorldCup #USA” Vaughan said, in a post on X.
2 matches get abandoned back to back in Florida
Two matches, USA vs Ireland and India vs Canada got abandoned, due to rain in Florida. Co incidentally, both the matches that got abandoned in the Florida stadium, were of the teams who would represent Group A in the Super Eight.
For the India vs Canada match, the outfield of the ground had gotten wet on the day of the match, as the ground did not have covers to cover the entire ground. The pitch, however, was maintained pretty well due to the constant efforts of the ground staff, and was covered throughout the duration of the rain.
The USA vs Ireland match was also called off under similar circumstances just a day ago, as USA went on to be the second team of Group A to play in the Super 8. There was no rain on the match day but the heavy showers the day before yesterday left the outfield in no condition for the USA vs Ireland match to take place.
The stadium is also supposed to host a match between Ireland and Pakistan, who are both prematurely out of the run for the T20 World Cup 2024 now.
