History:

Shreyas Iyer, born on December 6, 1994, hails from Chembur, Bombay (now Mumbai). His family includes his father, Santosh Iyer, and mother, Rohini Iyer, with roots tracing back to Thrissur, Kerala. Growing up, he attended Don Bosco High School in Matunga and later pursued his education at Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai. 

At the tender age of 18, Shreyas Iyer caught the eye of coach Pravin Amre while playing at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana. Under Amre’s guidance, he began his cricketing journey, laying the foundation for the promising career that awaited him. It’s fascinating to learn that during his college days at Podar College in Mumbai, Iyer not only excelled academically but also played a pivotal role in leading his college team to victory, lifting various trophies along the way. 

In the Test arena, Shreyas Iyer made his debut for India against New Zealand in Kanpur from November 25 to 29, 2021. On the One Day International (ODI) front, he stepped into the limelight with dual debuts. First, against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala on December 10, 2017, and shortly after, he faced New Zealand in Delhi on November 01, 2017. These moments marked the beginning of Iyer’s journey on the international stage, where he showcased his skills and talent in both Test and ODI formats for the Indian cricket team.

Teams:

Shreyas Iyer began his List A cricket journey for Mumbai in November 2014, participating in the 2014–15 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Displaying his batting prowess, he accumulated an impressive 273 runs in the tournament at an average of 54.60. The budding cricketer then entered the first-class cricket arena during the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy in December 2014.

In September 2018, Shreyas Iyer took on the role of vice-captain for Mumbai in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament. Displaying his batting prowess, he emerged as the leading run-scorer for Mumbai in the competition, amassing 373 runs in seven matches.

The following month, Iyer’s leadership skills came to the fore as he was named the captain of India B’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. Once again, he showcased his batting talent, finishing as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 199 runs in three matches. 

In November 2017, Shreyas Iyer earned a spot in India’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the series against Sri Lanka. His selection marked a significant opportunity to showcase his cricketing skills on the international stage. 

Fast forward to September 2021, and Iyer found himself named among the three reserve players in India’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. This recognition highlighted his versatility and standing as a valuable asset for the national team in the dynamic world of T20 cricket.

In February 2015, Shreyas Iyer became a part of the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL after being picked in the players’ auction for 2.6 crores. His promising performances led to his retention by the Daredevils in the 2018 IPL Auction. A significant turning point came on April 25, 2018, when Iyer was appointed as the new captain of the Delhi Daredevils, taking over the leadership from Gautam Gambhir. 

The momentum continued in the 2022 IPL Auction, where the Kolkata Knight Riders secured Iyer for a substantial ₹12.25 crores. Adding to the excitement, he was also named the team’s captain, setting the stage for a new chapter in his IPL journey.

In March 2021, Shreyas Iyer joined Lancashire for the Royal London One-Day Cup in the 2021 season. His signing marked an exciting chapter as he brought his cricketing skills to the English county team for the limited-overs competition. 

Achievements and Awards:

Back in February 2015, Shreyas Iyer made headlines in the IPL auction as the Delhi Daredevils secured him for a hefty sum of 2.6 crores. This significant deal not only marked his entry into the IPL but also earned him the title of the highest-earning uncapped player in the tournament at that time. 

On April 27, 2018, Shreyas Iyer created history by becoming the youngest captain to lead the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, achieving this milestone at the age of 23 years and 142 days. This remarkable feat occurred during a match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, making him not only the youngest captain for Delhi Daredevils but also the fourth youngest to captain any IPL team overall. 

On December 18, 2019, Shreyas Iyer left a memorable mark in Indian cricket during the second ODI against the West Indies. In a single over, he managed to score 31 runs, setting a new record for the highest runs scored by an Indian batsman in a single over in ODIs. 

Shreyas Iyer made history as the seventh Indian cricketer to be honored with the Player of the Match award in his Test debut, a remarkable achievement in the longest format of the game. Adding to this feat, he stands as the sole Indian player to accomplish the impressive feat of scoring both a century and a half-century in their debut Test match. This extraordinary performance underlines Iyer’s exceptional skills and sets him apart in the realm of Indian cricket debuts.
