Tajinder Singh Dhillon, once an underutilized player in the IPL, has made a strong mark in the Minor League Cricket (MLC) in the US, showcasing his consistency and power with the bat. The towering Sardar, now a key player for the Chicago Kingsmen, has been instrumental in his team’s success this season, playing a pivotal role in their championship victory. With a mix of maturity and refined skills, Tajinder is looking to turn heads once again, aiming for a return to the higher echelons of cricket.
The Unpredictable Journey of Tajinder Singh Dhillon
Tajinder Singh Dhillon’s career has been nothing short of unconventional. Despite his remarkable performances in local cricket, he found himself warming the bench for two consecutive IPL seasons. “I don’t know why Kumble said that! I am equally good against the fast bowlers,” Tajinder remarks humorously, recalling the praise from India legend Anil Kumble after his aggressive performance in the 2020 IPL nets. While his IPL stint may not have been as fruitful, Tajinder has continued to shine in other leagues, currently toying with spinners for the Chicago Kingsmen in Minor League Cricket. Reflecting on his career, Tajinder adds, “Slightly more mature! And more consistent now. That innings was way back when I had just started out. I played that sort of an innings once in a tournament but now I strive to play 3 match-winning innings in a tournament.”

Tajinder’s journey has been marked by perseverance, rising from underutilized positions to becoming a key performer for his team. His consistency and maturity have been pivotal in his success. He recalls the final of the 2024 Minor League season, where the Kingsmen were in a difficult situation at 5 for 98 chasing 173. Tajinder’s 42* off 25 balls, along with Hamad Azam’s blitz, took the team to victory. “I like that people do talk about my power hitting but I have also worked on my ones and twos. Out of the total 395 runs this season, I have run 179 runs,” he explains, highlighting his focus on versatility in his game.
The Silent Hero of Minor League Cricket
Despite not always being in the spotlight, Tajinder has worked tirelessly on his game, especially in the Minor League Cricket. He notes the challenges of not getting a consistent opportunity in the previous Major League season, where he played just 21 deliveries. “I didn’t get a proper chance in the major league in the previous edition and played at 7 or 8 due to the presence of senior international pros. This year as well I couldn’t get a chance to showcase my skill.” Yet, he found motivation through his performances in Minor League Cricket, aiming to fill the vacuum left by inconsistent runs in the middle order. Tajinder believes in his ability to handle spin and finish strong against pacers, stating, “My motivation was to emerge as an alternate choice through my performances in the Minor League.”
Batting at number 4 this season has brought out new dimensions in his game. The overseas coaches at the San Francisco Unicorns might want to take note of his adaptability across various surfaces and match situations. Tajinder’s resourcefulness was on display in a match against the Baltimore Royals, where he bludgeoned 54 off 80 balls on a placid surface, and in a crunch Super 8 game, where he tamed a difficult wicket with 59 off 41. “Running between the wickets is integral as well. Hopefully my performances in the minor league this year gets me in the reckoning for those key middle-order spots next year,” he concludes, reflecting on his desire for recognition and a brighter future.
