Former Pakistani fast bowler Tanveer Ahmed has sparked a debate by criticising the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to pay PKR 50 lakh each to the mentors of the Champions One-Day Cup 2024.
The mentors include well-known figures such as Shoaib Malik, Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Saqlain Mushtaq.
In his post, Ahmed stated, “Waqar Younis, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik, Saqlain Mushtaq—these guys are getting PKR 50 lakh as mentors. Do you think they have that level?” His comment suggests that the former pacer believes the PCB might be overvaluing the contributions these individuals can make in a mentoring capacity.
The Champions One-Day Cup: A Glimpse of Pakistan’s Top Talent
The Champions One-Day Cup, scheduled from September 12 to 29, will be played at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
It aims to showcase Pakistan‘s best cricketing talent, with all matches featuring the country’s top 150 cricketers.
The inclusion of high-profile mentors was expected to add value to the tournament, but Ahmed’s comments have brought the financial aspects of these appointments into question.
The tournament is seen as a critical platform for players to showcase their skills and secure spots in the national team.
However, Ahmed’s criticism highlights a broader concern about the allocation of resources within Pakistan cricket, particularly regarding how funds are spent on former players versus current development programs.
Ahmed Defends Babar Azam Amid Criticism
In a separate post, Tanveer Ahmed also defended Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam, who has faced criticism for his recent performances in the Test series against Bangladesh.
Ahmed lashed out at Babar’s detractors, stating that Babar remains Pakistan’s “king” despite his struggles. He emphasised that those criticising Babar are simply jealous and that the star batter’s status in Pakistan cricket is untouchable.

Ahmed’s comments reflect his belief in Babar’s long-term value to the team, regardless of occasional dips in form.
This support comes as Pakistan looks to bounce back in the ongoing Test series after suffering a 10-wicket defeat in the first match.
