Team India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir Confirms Rishabh Pant Will Keep Wickets in Second Test Against New Zealand

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will keep wickets for the Second Test against New Zealand. This announcement comes after Pant faced a knee injury during the First Test, which limited his participation on the field.

Gambhir addressed the media with confidence, stating, “He’s absolutely fine; he’ll keep wickets tomorrow.” This confirmation puts to rest any doubts regarding Pant’s availability and highlights the coaching staff’s confidence in his recovery. The team had previously opted to rest Pant after he sustained the injury while attempting to stump Devon Conway during the First Test.

The injury occurred on the second day of the First Test when Pant attempted to stump Devon Conway. During the 37th over, he failed to collect a ball that struck him, causing immediate discomfort. Following this incident, Dhruv Jurel stepped in to take over wicketkeeping duties for the remainder of the innings.

Assistant Coach Ryan Ten Doeschate had previously indicated that Pant was recovering well. “Rishabh is pretty good. He was having a little bit of discomfort at the end range of his movement with the knee,” Ten Doeschate noted. His comments suggested optimism about Pant’s readiness to perform in the upcoming match.

Shubman Gill and Washington Sundar Updates

Alongside Pant’s return, Gambhir provided insights into Shubman Gill’s injury status. Gill sustained an injury during the last game but has been in excellent form. The final decision on his inclusion in the playing XI remains pending.

Gambhir also discussed Washington Sundar’s potential role in the match. “With New Zealand having so many left-handers, we wanted someone who can take the ball away from them,” he explained. Sundar’s last-minute addition to the squad could offer strategic advantages against New Zealand‘s batting lineup.
