Temba Bavuma Ruled Out of First Test Against Bangladesh

Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s Test captain, has been ruled out of the first Test against Bangladesh due to a muscle strain in his left triceps. The injury was confirmed after scans, and as a result, Aiden Markram will step in as captain for the first match, scheduled to take place in Dhaka starting on October 21, 2024.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced that Bavuma will still travel with the team and continue his recovery under the medical team’s supervision, aiming to return for the second Test in Chattogram on October 29.

In addition to Bavuma’s absence, fast bowler Nandre Burger was earlier ruled out of the series due to a lumbar stress reaction. To strengthen the squad, CSA has called up Dewald Brevis and Lungi Ngidi.

Brevis, primarily known for his performances in limited-overs cricket, is yet to make his Test debut but has played 12 first-class matches. Ngidi, a key member of South Africa’s pace attack, has returned to the Test squad after featuring in the recent ODI series against Ireland.
